The Rule of Thirds is the mental division of an image using 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines before positioning the important elements within a scene along the lines or at points where they intersect. Points of interest should occur at 1/3 or 2/3 of the way up (or across) the frame, rather than in the centre.

The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section.
The idea is that an off-centre composition is more pleasing to the eye and looks more natural than one where the subject is placed right in the middle of the frame
